Is your website "Non-Secure?"

You may have noticed that some websites are labelled "Not secure" when you view them from your web browser. This might make you feel a little uneasy about clicking through to that website.

"Not secure" appears because the website does not have SSL certification. Without this, any data entered on the website is not encrypted, and therefore not secure. This includes any data typed into a form on the website or as part of an ecommerce transaction. The information entered can be read by anyone who wishes to do so. Automated data grabbing robots are used by hackers to gather this data from unsuspecting website visitors.

SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer. This means that any data entered on the website is encrypted before being transferred between the website user's browser and the web server. An encrypted connection is used for the data transfer keeping all the data secure.

The web address of a website with SSL certification will appear with HTTPS at the beginning, rather than HTTP.

If your website is appearing as non-secure it's a good idea to install SSL authentication. Even if your website is designed purely for viewing and does not gather any user-entered data, for two reasons:

  1. Google and other search engines prioritise those websites which are secure. So without SSL your website may drop down the search engine rankings.
  2. Your website looks a bit dodgy and untrustworthy if "not secure" appears in front of your web address in their browser. Potential clients may be deterred from visiting it.

Also, you are future-proofing your website for further website browser upgrades and if you use information from Analytics tools for search referral traffic, that information will be improved.

Contact your web developer to request SSL certification. Once installed make sure that a redirect is implemented so that all http pages are automatically redirected to the secure https.

If you have any questions about SSL please call us on 01273 384100 or email us at sales@cnc-ltd.co.uk.
