Protect Your Business

from Cyber Crime

With the CNC Cyber Essentials and Patch Management Scheme

Cybercrime is now the most commom form of crime worldwide. All businesses are threatened by this constant and evolving threat. The cyber criminals are always trying to be one step ahead.

The Office for National Statistics reports that over six million cyber-enabled fraud and cyber-crimes were committed in the last year in England and Wales.

The cost of cyber fraud to the UK private sector is now estimated to be over 22bn - with the average security breach costing anywhere between 75,000 and 311,000.

Criminals gain access using a range of techniques, including deception to trick people into revealing passwords. And spyware that records log-in details. It is imperative that your staff are educated in the way that cyber criminals work, because technology can only go so far in protecting you and your business. Your staff are the frontline in preventing your business from being attacked.

23% of internet users are still opening Phishing Emails! Make sure your staff know how to identify a phishing email, and that they never open an email they are unsure of.

On average it is 231 days before you know you have been hacked! A lot of critical information can be stolen and misused during this time period.

The good news is that the government and industry bodies are actively helping businesses protect themselves, with the Cyber Essentials scheme.

Cyber Essentials

Cyber Essentials is a government-backed, industry supported scheme to help organisations protect themselves against common cyber-attacks.

It provides a clear statement of the basic controls all organisations should implement in order to mitigate the risk from common internet based threats, within the context of the Government's 10 Steps to Cyber Security.

These include:

  • Network Security
  • User Education and Awareness
  • Access control and user privilege management
  • Patch management
  • Malware protection
  • Removable media controls

We recognise that not every business has the necessary skills and resources to address this business-critical issue.

GDPR - Are You Ready?

In the UK, GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) will replace the Data Protection Act of 1998. GDPR comes into force in May. The aim is to give people more control over how organisations use their data.

If your business holds personal data, names, addresses etc. you must now get consent. And you must keep a record of how and when an individual gave that consent. They may withdraw their consent whenever they want.

People can ask for access to the data that a business holds on them and the business must respond within one month. GDPR requires that businesses must be transparent about how they collect data, what they do with it, and how they process it.

Giving you the right to be forgotten!

People will have the right to request that their data is deleted if it's no longer necessary for the business to hold it.

What if my business suffers a data breach?

You must inform the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) within 72 hours of becoming aware of it. Failure to meet the 72-hour deadline could resut in a penalty of up to 2% of your business' annual worldwide revenue, or 10 million, whichever is higher.

Most important of all, you must tell the people affected by the data breach.

The whole point of GDPR is that businesses improve their data gathering and retention practices and review how they handle personal data. This applies to data held about employees, as well as customers and suppliers.

Up-to-date technology plays a part but it is also crucial that every member of staff is educated in how to handle personal data. You can encrypt your data all you like but, if an employee emails it to somebody it's still out there!

The business also needs to understand exactly what personal data it holds and how that data moves around the organisation so that it can be tracked.

  • Is all data encrypted and backed up?
  • Does your business hold on to some data for no good reason?

GDPR is due to come into effect across Europe on May 25th. For more information check out the ICO website or contact us on 01273 384100 or email sales@cnc-ltd.co.uk.
